ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to compare the teaching effectiveness of part-time and full-time clinical nursing faculty Results indicate that students rank part-time faculty as significantly less effective than full-time faculty on each of five categories measured by the Nursing Clinical Teacher Effectiveness Inventory and on the overall scale. These results are supported by the finding that there is no significant difference between student ratings of teacher effectiveness and the self-ratings of the teachers themselves. ********** Clinical instruction in nursing provides a real-life laboratory in which students integrate theoretical concepts learned from prerequisite science courses, courses in the humanities, and nursing lectures into the skills and behaviors required for successful practice. Effective clinical instruction helps students develop the problem-solving and decision-making skills essential for a professional nurse (1,2). The increased reliance on part-time faculty to provide clinical instruction that has resulted from the current nurse faculty shortage (3) leads to concern about teaching effectiveness (4-9). THIS ARTICLE REPORTS ON A STUDY THAT COMPARES STUDENT PERCEPTIONS OF THE TEACHING EFFECTIVENESS OF FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME CLINICAL NURSE FACULTY IN ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING PROGRAMS. THE STUDY ALSO EXAMINES HOW FACULTY VIEW THEIR OWN EFFECTIVENESS IN CLINICAL TEACHING.
